Boiu Mare commune is located in the southern part of the Maramuresh county, on the
road from Mesteacan to Targu Lapus. With a population of approximately 1300 inhabitants
(1311 in 2001, decreasing from 1413 in 1995), all Romanians, the commune is one of the
smallest in the county. In land surface, with 60 kmp it belongs to the middle ones.
At an altitude of 380 m, Boiu Mare has a hilly landscape, with large forests and pastures.
The Boiu plateau is part of the Transylvanian Plateau.
The geological structure (limestone substratum) of the region doesn't favour the existance of
economically valuable deposits.
The weather is moderate, with mild summers and not so cold winters. The animals that can be
found on the territory of the commune are the ones specific to the hilly regions of Romania:
wild boars, rabbits, foxes, deers, pheasant a.s.o.
The commune consists of four villages: Boiu Mare, Romanesti, Prislop and Francenii Boiului.
The northern border of the commune is the Lapus river, that collects the greatest part of the
springs in the commune.
The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture. The natural vegetation is the forrest,
mostly formed of beech.
In the villages is continued the tradition of wool carpets manufacturing and cloth seams.
