The main occupation of the inhabitants of Boiu Mare are agriculture, animal breeding and
growing fruit trees. Some of the secondary occupations are the harvest from nature,
hunting, making the traditional fruit brandy and various handicrafts.
There are archeological proofs that the agriculture was practiced in the commune since
its founding. The fertile lands were continuously extended by deforestation. Natural
and chemical fertilizers were used. The traditional cultures are wheat, corn, barley,
rye, potato, pumpkin, sunflower and sugar beet.
The animal breeding developed closely connected to agriculture, the animals making
the work and transports easier. The pastures occupied very large sufaces, gradually reduced
because of the cereal fields. The most common animals are horned cattle and horses, and
lately sheeps, goats and swine.
Because of the hilly landscape with a mild climate, growing fruit trees was practiced since
ancient times. The most common fruit trees that grow here are: plum trees, apple trees,
pear trees, cherry trees, quince trees and walnut trees. Usually, plums and apples are used
in part for consumption and in part for the making of the traditional fruit brandy, double refined.
The area is also known for the making of plum jam ("magiun").
The region of the commune offers to the inhabitants the possiblity of completing food
resources by harvesting various mushrooms and fruits from the forest and various plants
used as medicins.
Hunting is also one of the occupations of the inhabitants, as there are many wild animals
in the surroundings.
The handicrafts developed to satisfy the necessities of the community. Some of the
most important are carpentry, iron forging, bricklayering, spinning and weaving.
The weaving was practiced by all women in the village, since childhood.
The inhabitants constructed by themselves machines for manufacturing
various products, and this proves their ingenuousness.
